The Ultimate Cosy Night In: A Checklist for Doing Absolutely Nothing, Properly

Doing nothing is a skill, and it goes better with a plan. Here's the checklist for a proper cosy night in, from the lighting to where your phone goes.

There's doing nothing, and there's doing nothing properly. The first involves forty minutes of scrolling for something to watch, cold feet and one sad biscuit. The second is a cosy night in: lights low, blanket sorted, snacks in reach, film chosen, phone banished. This checklist gets you to the second one, in the right order, so that once you sit down you never have to get up again.

The cosy night in checklist at a glance

Most night in ideas stop at 'watch a film'. This covers everything around it, so screenshot it, stick it on the fridge or just read on.

  • Lighting: big light off, lamps on.
  • Blanket and layers: the nest is built before you sit down.
  • Snacks and a warm drink: chosen, prepared and within arm's reach.
  • Entertainment: decided before the scrolling starts.
  • Phone: on the other side of the room.
  • Feet: warm, soft and sorted.

Set the scene: lighting, blanket and layers

Kill the big light

The ceiling light is for finding lost keys, not for relaxing. Switch it off and build the mood from lower, warmer sources: a lamp or two, fairy lights along a shelf, the glow of the TV. If you like candles, keep them well away from blankets and never leave them unattended.

Close the curtains while you're at it. A night in feels more like a night in when the outside world isn't looking in.

Build the nest first

The classic mistake is sitting down before the nest is ready. The cosy night in essentials are simple: a throw, extra cushions and a second blanket for when the first one isn't enough. Get them all in place before you commit, because once you're horizontal, nobody is getting up for a cushion.

Then sort the outfit. Joggers, an oversized hoodie, thick socks: anything soft you'd happily fall asleep in. Layers beat one heavy jumper, because you can peel one off when the room warms up without leaving the sofa. If you'd rather look put together while doing absolutely nothing, try our sneaker-inspired loungewear fits.

Snacks and a warm drink, within reach

The mid-film trip to the kitchen is where nights in fall apart. You go for crisps and come back twenty minutes later having emptied the dishwasher and answered three messages. Prep everything in one go.

  • Something savoury: crisps, popcorn, cheese and crackers.
  • Something sweet: chocolate, biscuits, whatever's been hiding at the back of the cupboard.
  • Something slightly fancy, because it's a special occasion. It isn't, but it could be.
  • A warm drink: tea, hot chocolate or something spiced, in your biggest mug.
  • A glass of water, because future you will be grateful.
  • A tray, so it all arrives in one trip.

Make the warm drink your very last job, just before you sit down, so it's still hot when the opening credits roll. And if you're sharing, one big bowl beats two small ones. It's more generous, and it's funnier when someone hogs it.

Choose the film before you start scrolling

This is the rule that changes everything. Decide what you're watching before you sit down, not after, because endless thumbnails are where good evenings go to die. A few ways to make it painless:

  • The daytime shortlist. Pick three options at lunchtime. Tonight, you choose from those three and nothing else.
  • The two-minute rule. Set a timer. When it goes off, the next thing that looks decent wins.
  • The comfort series. Keep one on standby for nights when no film will do. You know the one.
  • Take turns. Watching with someone? Alternate who picks. No vetoes, no appeals.

And don't feel bad about a rewatch. On a proper night in, knowing exactly how it ends is half the comfort.

Put your phone on the other side of the room

Not face down on the arm of the sofa. Not tucked under a cushion 'just in case'. On the other side of the room, on silent, where reaching it means leaving the nest.

  • Put it on charge across the room. It needed charging anyway, and now it has a job.
  • Switch on do not disturb, so only the calls that matter get through.
  • Tell the group chat you're off for the night. Nobody will mind. Some will be jealous.

You'll be surprised how little you miss it once getting to it takes effort. The messages will still be there in the morning, and you'll actually remember what happened in the film.

Get your feet sorted

Cold feet can ruin a perfectly good night in. They're the thing everyone forgets, and the thing that'll have you up and hunting for socks halfway through the second act. Sort them before you settle.

This is where we come in. CloudKicks are oversized plush sneaker-slippers made for exactly this kind of evening, with a plush outer, a cushioned interior and a street-inspired shape that means you don't look like you've given up. They're designed primarily for indoor comfort, which makes the sofa their natural habitat.

“I forget I am wearing them. Easily the most comfortable footwear I own.”

Sharing the sofa? One pair of each colourway is the move. Our guide to matching slippers for couples and housemates makes the case properly.

Now do absolutely nothing

That's it. Lights low, nest built, snacks in reach, film chosen, phone across the room, feet sorted. Everything is done, which means you can finally do nothing, properly.

The whole checklist takes a few minutes and pays you back all evening. If your feet are the missing piece, shop the drop. And if you want your whole place to feel like this more often, our small flat, big comfort guide is a good next read.
